The 9 Fruit of The Spirit Bible Verse

Galatians 5:22-23 share the verses on the fruit of the Spirit, oftentimes confused to be the fruits of the Spirit, but it is singular fruit.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Of course, the word there, temperance, means self-control or being able to bridle yourself.

Before we go into a mini-teaching on the Fruit of The Spirit we invite you to take the Fruit of The Spirit test by clicking on the page when the image for the test shows up.

Without further ado, let's get started.

To begin let's focus on what the Fruit of the Spirit Really is.

  • The Fruit of the Spirit is The Work or Production of The Holy Spirit.
  • The Fruit of The Spirit is not produced by man.
  • The Fruit of The Spirit is evidence of The Spirit in a person's life.
  • Yes, the Fruit of The Spirit is the evidence of the Spirit in a person's life.

Remember, Jesus said, in the gospels, that a good tree brings forth good fruit, and a bad tree brings forth bad fruit, and by their fruit, you shall know them.

Matthew 7:17-19  17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

The evidence of the Tree of the Spirit of God being in your life is the fruit of the Spirit.

The evidence of the Holy Spirit in-dwelling born-again believers is the fruit of the Spirit. Scripture in fact says that you shall know them by their love, and one of the first aspects of the fruit of the Spirit is in fact, love.

John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Let's talk about love.

1. Love is A Person

Love is not only about being good or about being kind, but it's about being many things. The book of Corinthians,  in Chapter 13, shares with us what love is, and in 1Corinthians 13 we see that love goes beyond the Western understanding of what love is, in terms of being nice, or in terms of being infatuated. It's not phileo, it is agape- that's what it actually is.

And so we see from 1Corinthians 13, that love suffers all things, it bears all things in hopes all things, endures all things, believes all things. This means that love is not just an abstract quality, love is a person. In fact, the Scriptures say that God is love (1John 4:16). And so to be of love and to carry love, you have to carry God and that's why the scriptures in fact show that one aspect of the fruit of the Spirit is love. Let's go on to the second facet of the fruit of the Spirit. Let's look at joy.

2. Joy is not Happiness.

Joy is not happiness. Happiness is fleeting. It only exists when something good happens. But when something bad happens, happiness runs away. Not so with joy. When something bad happens, Joy still remains because joy is not dependent on happenstance.

Joy is dependent on the spiritual state of an individual. Let me give you an example. Remember, the Scripture says that for the joy that was set before him He endured the suffering. He endured suffering, meaning he went through a bad situation or a bad happening that should have caused him to be unhappy but notice, it didn't stop His joy. Happiness is not joy.

Hebrews 12:1-3 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

Joy is that which you acquire because of your spiritual state, because of your positioning with God? In fact, the scriptures in Romans 14:17, say that the kingdom of God is not meat or drink but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

The Kingdom of God talks about a place, a positioning or an entity that is of the things of God. And so joy is not based on happenstance. Joy is eternal. Joy is based on positioning and because of the positioning that God wrought through Christ Jesus for us, we have been given a heavenly position (Ephesians 1:3-5) and that's why we have joy. Joy again is eternal. It is not something that is temporal like happiness.

It is wrought by the Spirit of God and hence, it is an aspect of the Spirit of God's fruit.

3. You can Have Peace In The Midst of Struggle and Obstacles!

Peace is not dependent on whether or not you have a peaceful environment. You remember Jesus said, My peace I give unto you, not as the world gives I give unto you.

Let me find the exact scripture for you here.

John 14:26-27 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

If you read the aforementioned scripture, you will see that peace again goes back to a spiritual state, where what you have on the inside by the Spirit of God impacts you and your environment. Look at what The Lord Jesus said to the disciples.

Matthew 10:11-15 11And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. 12And when ye come into a house, salute it. 13And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. 15Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

So the disciples carried peace, they didn't enter into peace, in the circumstances, they were the carriers of peace. And that is why the scriptures in fact say that Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

And because they bring peace, they are the progenitors of peace by the Holy Spirit and so are we, by The Spirit.

4. Got Patience?

Long-suffering can also be called Patience.

I don't know about you, but if you are born again, you are well acquainted with patience because everything that God does, he does with an aspect of patience built into it. Isn't that what the scripture says? Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, right?

Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Waiting.

  • Patience has a lot to do with the spiritual life.
  • Without the ability to wait, you will not be fortified by God.
  • And so as a characteristic of the fruit of the Spirit, patience is fundamental to the spiritual life in Christ. In fact, let's look at what the Apostle James shares by The Spirit.

James 1:2-5 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

So the work of the Holy Spirit brings about a spirit of patience in you so that God can finish His work in and through you.

If you think about it, God is the most patient Being in the universe. Why? Because e is waiting for us to grow up into the full stature of Christ.

Ephesians 4:11-13 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Some of the prayers that Jesus prayed in John 17 have not been fulfilled yet. But we have a God that is able to wait for over 2000 years for the fulfillment of His prayers.

We have a God that is able to wait for around 6000 years for mankind to come into its full position through the church; to come alive and be everything that it was meant to be before the millennial reign of Christ.

God is patient. And so those who have the Spirit of God will likewise be patient.

5. Gentleness is power under control

Gentleness - Gentleness is what God has given to us every single day. He doesn't give us what we deserve. He gives us what He has purposed for us. Gentleness is knowing your strength but giving to somebody something that is not on equal terms with that strength.

Gentleness is when you touch somebody through the mercy of God based on where they are and not based on where you think that they should be. It is part of the fruit of the Spirit.

6. Goodness is a quality of God

Goodness. Goodness is what we ascribe to God. There's a saying that goes like this: God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good. I don't know if you've heard it before, but goodness is what brings sinners unto repentance, the Scripture says, and this is what is evident in the life of a believer as the fruit because we are bearing fruit because of who we are. A good tree brings forth good fruit is what Jesus said.

Romans 2:3-4  3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

7. Faith is The Substance of Things Hoped For and The Evidence Of Things Not Seen

Faith or Faithfulness. Of course, we know from Hebrews 11:1 that faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. And of course, we know from Hebrews 11:6, that it is impossible to please God without faith, for those who come to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Faithfulness is a must for a believer and it is wrought by the Spirit of God.

Indeed the scripture says in Romans 10:17 that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. That word of God is brought to us by the Spirit of God, who relays what is declared to us according to what Jesus said in the Gospels in John 14:26.

And to show faithfulness or to be full of faith is the work or production of the Holy Spirit and hence it is an aspect of The Spirit's fruit.

8. Meekness is About Putting Your Power Under The Control of God

Meekness.

Meekness, again, is about you not using your full strength. It is about being self-controlled in terms of your use of your strength. Even though you're strong, you don't use your full strength just because you can. Let me say it like this.

Even though you're able to prophesy, doesn't mean that because somebody asks you to prophesy that you prophesy, because everything must be led by the Spirit of God. Everything must be led by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:14  14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

And so meekness goes hand in hand with a spirit of self-control because you are able to keep your strength for the purposes of God and not let your strength be wasted on the flesh and the desires of the flesh.

And lastly, let's look at temperance or self-control.

9. Self-Control Is The Result of Fearing God and Trusting Him.

Self-control is essential for a believer. Scripture says that those who live godly shall suffer persecution. And so a believer must display the qualities of God even when he or she is maligned and ridiculed, spat at when doing God has called him or her to do. Following our Lord Jesus, He still asked the Father to forgive them, for they knew not what they did(Luke 23:34).

Self-control is being able to look at your situation and know that God is in control. And because He is in control, you don't have to force your will, your fleshly will upon a situation. You can rely on the will of God for that particular situation.

So, if you find people who have anger problems, who are easily swayed in terms of anger, they may not be in a position where they're yielding to the Spirit of God.

Because the self-control that God gives, and produces, will allow them to gain strength over their fleshly desires so that God can rule through their lives.

2Timothy2:11-12 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

The more that you deny yourself and your fleshly desires as a believer for God and His desires, the more you will see the Fruit or The Productions of The Holy Spirit ( The Tree)  in Your life!

So in the New Testament, God gives a basic breakdown of the fruit of the Spirit. And in terms of spiritual growth, the more that you see of the fruit of the Spirit in your life is the closer you are getting to God because the more that you display the fruit is the more that you are becoming like him because it is God Himself that produces the fruit. But as shared earlier, this requires you to die to yourself, so that He can live through you.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

And so the Apostle Paul uses this aspect of the scripture in Galatians 5:22, to highlight Christian character; to show spiritual fruit and what is becoming of a believer (what is becoming of the believer's spiritual life) so that the believer can test to see whether or not they are in the faith and test to see whether or not they are yielding to the Spirit of God. Because as a believer pays attention to these things, the Lord will help them to see that in their daily life that he or she needs to submit more and more to Him so that He can be displayed and manifested through their lives.

It's important to note here that the sinful nature of man cannot produce the fruit of the Spirit.

The Christian faith is not about man doing something. It's about God doing something through man.

And so this eternal life position that a man has when he or she is born again is supposed to yield life and blessing the earth. Through thy seed the nations of the earth shall be blessed is what The Lord said to Abraham in Genesis 22:18. And we know that we are that seed through Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

And so in order to increase the fruit of the Spirit, prayer is very much needed. Yielding is very much needed. Because the spiritual growth of the believer depends on yielding to the Lord Jesus Christ and denying the lusts of the flesh. And in fact, the Lord Jesus Christ, our shares are some very powerful things about God's Spirit.

God's Spirit, He says would in fact guide us into all truth.

John 16:13 Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come.

And so this life of the believer, being eternal life, God's life in their own life right now. When you get born again, you have been translated from the power of darkness to the Kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ.

In fact, a scripture, in fact, says that He has called us to bear fruit and that fruit should remain (John 15).

The only entity that we know remains is the word of God. And so the Word of God in John 6:63 which says the Word that the Lord speaks is Spirit and Life, will bring forth the fruit of the Spirit because the fruit or the end result of the Spirit of God's work is the fruit.

And so Jesus was saying, in a roundabout way, is that when we are led by the Holy Spirit, we will be producing the Word of God in our lives, or said another way, we will be producing the fruit of the Word of God in our lives. Because this word is in fact, our nature. The Word of God is in fact the tree. And we are that tree that is to produce fruit, and this fruit is to remain for the only thing that will remain the Word of God. And we see this in Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

So, the word of the Lord is what endures forever. So if this fruit is enduring forever, it is the result of the Word of God!

Just thought I should put that in there.

So here on this page, we have provided many Bible verses with regards to the fruit of the Spirit and the key Bible verse, of course, is Galatians 5:22-23.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such, there is no law.

Use this scripture for your Bible study.

Let's be led by The Holy Spirit and let the fruit of the Holy Spirit be manifested in our lives. It's essential that we, as believers, grow up into the things of God through daily prayer, daily surrendering to Him and His desires in everyday life, for His glory.
