Church Fathers on Faith — Table
| Church Father | View on Faith |
|---|---|
| Irenaeus of Lyons | Irenaeus taught that faith is the trustful acceptance of God’s revelation made visible in Christ. He saw faith as the means by which believers are restored to the knowledge of God lost in the Fall. Faith, for him, grows through obedience and participation in the life of the Church. |
| Clement of Alexandria | Clement taught that faith is the foundation of Christian knowledge, leading the believer into deeper understanding. He believed faith is the beginning of salvation, but it must mature into love and virtue. Faith unites the soul to the true God by freeing it from ignorance. |
| Origen | Origen saw faith as the gateway to spiritual growth and the purification of the mind. He taught that faith precedes understanding, but understanding later strengthens faith. True faith, he said, trusts God even when His purposes remain hidden. |
| Athanasius | Athanasius taught that faith means embracing Christ as the incarnate Word who reveals the Father. He believed faith rests on the certainty of God’s work in the Incarnation. For him, faith is the believer’s union with Christ, producing perseverance and holiness. |
| Basil the Great | Basil taught that faith is both a confession of truth and a lived obedience to Christ. He believed faith is strengthened through prayer, ascetic discipline, and charity. True faith, he said, produces courage in suffering and clarity in moral judgment. |
| Gregory of Nazianzus | Gregory taught that faith is the soul’s assent to divine mysteries “too great for words.” He believed faith is not irrational but rises above the limits of human intellect. For him, faith is a humble posture that opens the believer to the life of the Trinity. |
| John Chrysostom | Chrysostom taught that faith is active trust that expresses itself through works of mercy and steadfast endurance. He emphasized that faith transforms the heart and reforms behavior. Faith, he said, is strengthened by Scripture and purified by trials. |
| Ambrose of Milan | Ambrose taught that faith is the root of justification and the “door” through which grace enters the soul. He believed faith gives the believer strength to resist sin and imitate Christ. Faith produces inner peace because it rests in God’s promises. |
| Augustine of Hippo | Augustine taught that faith is God’s gift, enabling the soul to trust Him before full understanding. He believed faith precedes knowledge but leads ultimately to deeper sight of God. True faith expresses itself in love and perseverance in grace. |
| Leo the Great | Leo taught that faith anchors the believer in Christ’s saving work and guards the heart from error. He believed faith is strengthened by confession of orthodox doctrine. For him, faith shapes the Christian life by forming humility, charity, and hope. |

More on Trusting God and Having Faith In God- My Personal Story Included!
You’ve got to let go and Let God, and when You do, you'll see the vision that He has given to you for your life come to pass in Jesus' Name.
"You can’t fulfill God’s dream for your life on your own. You have to include the One who had the dream in the first place!”
My name is Quinson Thomas(duh). And I am a Christian. I love the Lord Jesus Christ with everything that is within me, and I have been so for most of my life. But there came a point in my life where I knew that this love had to be poured out and expressed in ways that I could hardly imagine. And in pouring out this love, I’m talking about fulfilling your God-given destiny or your calling in Christ.
My Faith Beginnings
My story begins not with the white picket fence or the mowed lawn, but with the Word of God. I knew that God had called me to do something special -to shine my light for all to see my good works and glorify my Father in heaven. But, the way that God presented it to me was not the way that I wanted.
You see, I’ve always wanted to be a doctor. I can clearly remember kneeling down at a table that held my older brother’s school books and saying that I wanted to be a doctor. And that’s what I pursued. I had great grades all through school; even up to the first two years of Community College.
Then, the time came to send out applications to schools abroad. I had been focusing on applying to schools in the UK, and so I used the UCAS application system.
But, along the way something really unexpected happened! I missed the application deadlines. I mean, I had been there searching the pages, and I believed that I had the right date, but as I later discovered, that wasn’t true! I was annoyed, disturbed and frustrated. But while perplexed, I was not without hope. I had the LORD- He is my Hope.
Faith in God will Stretch You
Around this time the Lord began speaking to me even more clearly about what He had called me to do in Christ. But, I didn’t want to listen. Nosiree! The Lord was calling me to full-time ministry. I thought, “I can’t be a pastor.”
"Woah, Lord. Too much responsibility."
Little did I know at the time... the Lord wasn’t calling me to just be a pastor. He had much more than that for me. Three times, the Lord called to me through the words of men of God on TBN, but I didn’t listen. I knew that they were speaking to me, because every time I turned on the television, the Holy Spirit used them to call out to me. But, I was stubborn.
And so the Story Continues...
So, I applied to a very prestigious school in the USA and was accepted. I thought, maybe it wasn’t God that I was hearing. But I was wrong. Every turn since then has been hard and trying. It was as if my steps were not being prospered by the Lord.
My good grades went from good to mediocre to abysmal. And I sought the Lord earnestly day and night. And in the night-watches, the Lord would remind me that this was not His best for my life. I had to go back home to the place that He had called me.
And so after many tears and frustration and questions, I returned home to fulfill the ministry and calling that He had upon my life. And here I am today, talking to you.
What does my story have to do with anything? I’ll tell you! There is a new breed of destiny chasers in town. These are people who don’t take mediocrity for an answer. These are those who want their light to shine to bring glory to God our Father through our Lord Jesus Christ! These are people have been pushed down, and upset, and frustrated, but are still pressing on because they know that the Lord had called them to do something special.
As The Faith Quotes in The Bible Above Show, The Lord Will Separate You Unto Himself
The Lord had to take me out of the world system and set me apart because there is a company of mighty warriors that will transform this world in ways that we can hardly imagine.
The scope and the impact of these mighty warriors, these destiny chasers was too great for the Lord to leave me to do what I wanted.
The Lord had to bring me to the place of realizing that there was much at stake. And glory to God, I’m glad that He did. And this book that has taken about 2 years of experience and the Lord’s impartation and training to develop is finally here. This book is what I call a breakthrough book.
But before I introduce the book, let me speak to you. And if you’ve read this far, I believe you’re a member of this new breed of Destiny chasers in the Body of Christ.
You are not crazy- The Bible Will Testify of Your Faith!
I can’t tell you how many times I have been told that I’ve lost a screw or that what God has promised me is impossible or that I should continue to do things the way that everyone else has been doing things.
And the most frustrating part of it all is that these words of disappointment and disapproval have been coming from those closest to me- my immediate family and friends. But, can I tell you the truth? Jesus Christ is Lord! And everything that God has promised you shall come to pass as you abide in Him.
I want to comfort you of the truth that the Lord revealed to me in His Word,
34"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn 'a man against his father,a daughter against her mother,a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law -36a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.'[e]37"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (Matthew10: 34-39)
You see if you’re ever going to go up higher, you’ve got to be able to trust in the Lord completely, as the Bible clearly shows.
You have to let go and let God.
Even your family and friends at times won’t understand what the Lord has for you because they’ve only seen the you that you’ve been in the past. They can’t accept the you that God says that you will be. And so when the Lord Jesus says that He came to send a sword He’s talking there about the Word of God that sets you apart from those around you so that you can soar to the heights that God intends for you. In other words, to do what God created you in Christ Jesus to do, you must be fully committed to the cause of Christ, and in so doing, those around you, who may later on see your light, will know that it is God who promoted you.
So to second this... you’re not crazy!
God’s word is Truth, and it shall come to pass! I don’t know exactly what God has called you to do, but I do know that it will bring Him lots and lots of glory! And I do know that along the way, you’ve probably become frustrated concerning the length of time concerning it. I must comfort you and tell you that it will not all come at once, but little by little, and step by step. There’s a transformative work that God has to bring you through to be able to reach that place of promise.
But, be encouraged in this: as you let go and let God you will begin to see small victories that will prepare you and keep you motivated as you run the race onto the bigger and greater things in the Lord. This is the scripture that the Lord has been highlighting to me in the course of writing this book...
You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you
No one probably expected me at the age of 19 to host my own ministry broadcast on the most listened to radio station in the British Virgin Islands. I could barely make ends meet. Sure, I paid off the first 3 or so broadcasts on time, but without a job, it would seem impossible to do so, but I did so through Christ who strengthened me.
Then when I got a job, even though the hassles weren’t over, I was able to use the Wisdom and the Faith that the Lord had equipped me with to make greater strides in Him.
Faith Will Cause You To Do The Unexpected
No one expected me to have an online ministry, but it was what God had called me to, and He equips His children as they abide in Him!
So, here’s what I’m saying to you...
Let go and let God be in control of your life. He has great plans for you.
(Jeremiah 29:11) I know the plans that I have for you, says the Lord; plans for your good and not for your evil; to give you a future with an expected end.
I didn’t get here overnight. That’s not the way that God works. He does things step upon step; and precept upon precept so that when you get to the place He promised you, you’ll be able to stand in the full weight and authority of that position and say,
“Look what my God has done!”
The ‘secret’ (so to speak) is to trust in God and obey!
You have to Let go and let God!
